The weather was gloomy as they left town, matching their moods. It was grey with a slight drizzle. It seemed an ominous sign.
He gave her a questioning look as she sat on the passenger side. He was sorely tempted to turn around and drive home. She just sighed as she motioned forward with her head… “Keep going.”
The weather started to clear an hour out of town. Still neither one seemed like they wanted to break the silence. In exasperation she finally gasped, “Oh for goodness sake! You’d think someone was dying!”
He looked at her in astonishment as she turned in his direction. A smile blossomed on her face as she began to giggle. He chuckled as the mood lifted, deciding they might as well enjoy the drive since it was to be their last together.
For the rest of the trip they chatted like they had done so many times before. She pointed out familiar landmarks along the way, commenting on what changes had occurred since their last trip. It was a drive they’d taken many times before, the two of them enjoying the scenery during each sojourn.
He could feel the heaviness threaten to engulf him again. He swallowed it down, determined to enjoy the trip. Then he glanced over at her, appreciating her positive spirit and the playfulness he hadn’t seen in a long time.
The trip took five hours with a stop for lunch along the way. He could feel a growing apprehension as they drew closer to their destination. He felt mixed emotions as he continued to find ways to make conversation with her.
They pulled into the motel and parked before disembarking. He carried in their overnight bags as she went up to the counter. The desk clerk smiled as she recognized them.
“Back again?”
“It’s our anniversary,” the wife told her with a smile.
“Congratulations! Welcome back.” Then she began to check her records before telling them, “I can get you that room at the end of the hall.”
“Perfect.”
She turned and looked at him, the faintest hint of a pained expression in her eyes. He made himself smile at her. She smiled back before telling him,” I’d like a swim before we go out to eat.”
“Anything you say, dear.”
They got their keycard from the clerk before walking to their room. “It’s nice to see Anne again,” she observed. “She always seems to remember us.”
“She’s always been good to us,” he agreed.
They said no more as they got to the room and went inside. The bags went at the end of the bed where she opened hers and pulled out her suit. He saw the red bikini that came out. She gave him a knowing smile before taking it to the bathroom.
He quickly changed into his trunks. He was ready when she emerged. The two-piece made her look stunning as ever, and he felt an instinctive stirring down below.
She caught him ogling her, and it made her smile. Then she took his hand. She led him down the hall to the pool at the end of the building.
They spent a good hour and a half laughing and splashing each other in the water. She allowed him to dunk her until the bubbles came up. When he let her up she was grinning happily.
They went for a soak in the nearby hot tub. He turned on the jets as she gingerly stepped into the water… “Oooh, it’s hot.”
“Too much?”
“No, darling; it’s perfect.”
They settled into the water sitting next to each other. They lapsed into silence while staring off into space. Even though they were sitting right next to each other they felt a growing distance between them.
She sighed heavily. Then she took his hand. “Let’s go down to the river. I want to see the geese and the falls.”
He helped her climb the steps out of the bubbling water, noticing the tremor had returned. He fetched a towel for her from the towel rack. Then they dried themselves off before heading back to the room.
They got dressed and then headed for the exit. The river was a short walk down the lane. They held hands, neither feeling like speaking.
There were several flocks of geese hanging out by the water’s edge. “Oh look, honey!” she gasped with joy. “They’ve had their babies!” There were a couple groups of furry little down-covered goslings nervously twittering close to their parents as the couple passed by.
They walked a mile along the path next to the riverbank until the tremor got worse. He caught her looking out at the water a couple times. It made him clutch her hand a little tighter.
They slowly made their way back to the motel, making him wonder if he’d kept her out too long. A nice restaurant sat across the street, and she wanted to go eat. They checked for crossing traffic before making their way over to the building.
They were seated in a nice part of the restaurant with a view out the window. He ordered a nice steak while she ordered fish and shrimp. He gave her a questioning look, but she smiled as she told him, “I’m hungry and I want my favorite.”
The meal was delicious. She told the waitress they were celebrating their anniversary. The comment earned them a couple of complimentary slices of cheesecake.
He ate all of his, but she only got down a couple of bites before she excused herself from the table. He stiffened as he watched her go. Then it all came flooding back. He had to fist the tears out of his eyes.
She gave him a smile as she returned. The look in her expression told it all. “Totally worth it,” she said with a smile. “You can have the rest of my cheesecake.”
He nibbled at it, fighting back the tears until she reached under the table to take his hand. She whispered, “It’ll be all right.” He wanted to tell her it wouldn’t, but he didn’t want to spoil the rest of the meal.
“My treat,” she told him as she reached into her purse and took out her credit card. He gave her a peck on the lips as the waitress came and took the card. She returned two minutes later with the card and the receipt.
He had to help her back across the street. They went to their room to watch television. She smiled as she told him he had control of the remote for a while as she was going to take a nap.
He aimlessly surfed through the channels. Nothing seemed worth watching. No doubt it was because certain things were weighing heavily on his mind.
A hand shaking his roused him from sleep. He opened his eyes to see her standing there next to the chair. She was already wearing her black bikini, the one he liked a shade better than the red one.
She gave him a look as though he’d been naughty. “You fell asleep and didn’t wake me. It’s after midnight. And I want to go for my swim.”
He felt a jolt in his stomach as a lump lodged in his throat. “Are you sure?”
“You promised me a little skinny-dip while we were here. I’m holding you to that. It’s late so we should have the pool all to ourselves.”
He got undressed right in front of her. She licked her lips to see him naked. Then he pulled out the red Speedos she’s packed for him.
He gave her a questioning look. “You know I like those, darling. Why do you think I packed them?” He smiled with some sadness as he slipped into them.
He helped her down the hall to the pool. The water was still; the pool was empty; and the lights dimmed for the night. The jets were bubbling in the hot tub. Someone must have recently been using it.
He motioned at it with his head. “Want to go for a soak?”
“I want to get in the pool first. Maybe later.” Both suspected she would now have a lot of trouble getting in and out with those bubbling jets. And the hot water would have complicated things.
He swallowed hard as he helped her down into the pool. She smiled as she drifted backward away from him. The water seemed to help stabilize her.
He swam with her out into the deep end. She had a little trouble treading water as she reached behind her back to pop the strings to her top. When the material floated away he saw her nipples were erect.
She shed her bottoms before pulling him to her. “You too,” she murmured, kissing him again as she pawed at his suit. He had to help her get it off.
She reached down and stroked him. “I’m going to miss this,” she murmured as she kissed him again. Then he felt her weaken in his grasp.
“Maybe we shouldn’t do this, honey.”
“You promised, darling. Besides, I want to.” She was trying to climb into his lap.
For the first time in a long time he felt himself inside her. He winced as he told her, “But it… hurts you.” But that wasn’t what was really bothering him.
“Let me… do this. It’ll be… all right.”
She climbed into his lap, slowly taking him fully inside her. He saw the flicker of pain in her expression. She deliberately gave him a smile as she got it all the way in.
“Feels nice, darling. It’s been so long.”
“Honey…”
“Take me under, darling.”
They both inhaled as they slipped under the surface. He began kissing her breasts, once more trying hard to keep the tears from flowing. She moaned as she watched him, holding his head with her hand while appreciating the attention he was giving her.
She grunted and bubbled, causing him to take them up to the surface. He tried to get her to climb off. But she stayed in his lap with him still inside her.
She looked at him with a pained expression. “I can’t… stay down as long as… I used to. I can’t… hold my breath anymore.”
“Honey, I can’t…”
“Now, Darling. I want to do it now. It’s been a wonderful day and I’ll never forget it. I even got to eat my favorite meal.”
“Honey, I…”
“I want to feel you… inside me… one last time. Besides, you promised.”
She looked right into his eyes. He could see the pleading look. He just couldn’t deny her.
She wrapped him up in her arms as she kissed him deeply. But he could feel her body trembling. And that spasm had returned in her stomach.
He took her down as he embraced her. She moaned into his mouth, hugging him tightly as she kissed him deeply. Then she shuddered as she gulped water. He was almost certain she’d done it deliberately.
For a moment she held on as though she was never going to let go. He could feel her spasming against him as he remained hard inside her clenching womanhood. It felt so wrong somehow… and yet she had wanted to do it this way since the water would help give her some stability.
The instinct to survive kicked in. But by then she was fully committed as she hitched and convulsed. The time had come.
He kissed her harder as he embraced her. She was gurgling and shuddering. Then she went limp in his grasp.
The tears boiled over as he disengaged and rose to the surface. She drifted to the floor of the pool, her stomach full of water. She stared upward at him with lifeless eyes, but he saw no accusatory stare.
He swam down, scooped up his Speedos and then made his way to the shallow end. He told himself he should never have agreed to this as he got them back on. Then he climbed out of the water and dried himself off.
He looked down at her as she lay on her back in the deep end. He wanted to curse her for talking him into this. But she’d wanted it this way, and now there would be no more pain. Besides, she’d seemed so proud getting down all that seafood before being forced to head to the restroom.
He left the pool and headed for his room. It was all he could do not to bawl his eyes out. Fifteen minutes later he was on his way back to the pool, “wondering what was taking her so long to come back to the room” when he ran into the distraught clerk coming down the hall toward him.
She was bawling her eyes out, telling him something terrible had happened to his wife in the pool. He shook his head no as they rushed to the pool. It was then all the tears he’d bottled up for the last six months came out in a torrent…
